Understanding Gold Prices in India
Gold prices in India are determined by a combination of international spot prices (quoted in USD per troy ounce on the London Bullion Market), the USD/INR exchange rate, import duties (currently 15% including customs and AIDC), and 3% GST applied at the retail level.
This is why Indian gold rates can move even when the international price is flat — a weakening rupee automatically raises domestic gold prices. Conversely, a strong rupee can keep local prices stable even when global gold rises.
India is one of the world's largest gold consumers, importing 700–900 tonnes annually. Demand peaks during wedding season (October to December) and festivals like Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya, and Diwali — typically pushing prices higher. Gold also serves as a critical financial hedge for millions of Indian households.
When buying gold jewellery, remember the total cost includes the gold value (based on karat purity), making charges (5–25% of gold value), and 3% GST on both. Always insist on BIS hallmarked jewellery for guaranteed purity.
